* Variety is the Spice of Life!

Posted on July 11th, 2013 by . Filed under Uncategorized .

The last couple of days have all about the variety for us. We even made a few drops on some rocky structure yesterday in search of a vermillion rockfish for one of our guests, Bob DeLong.

Here’s Jim Coe with the nice 33 pound king salmon he caught with us a couple days ago. There’s been a few larger Chinook showing up in our waters the last few days and we even got word of a 63 pounder being caught by another one of the lodge operations near Craig. Yowza! We ran into a couple of big schools of kings yesterday that tore us up before moving on. Fun stuff!

Chuck, Bob, Jeff, and Jim with a Tyee and some nice bottomfish to round out the day. Bob’s ling cod was about as close to the 45″ slot limit as you can get…what a hawg! We also caught plenty of silver salmon on this particular day.

This is the red Irish lord sculpin that will sometimes latch onto a cut plug herring. They have spectacular colors for a lowly old bullhead. Very cool fish!

Fishing remains excellent here in Craig, Alaska. We’ve got great numbers of silver salmon around and the king numbers are starting to rebuild again.

Thanks again for stopping by!

* Thain’s North River Nears Completion

Posted on April 17th, 2013 by . Filed under Uncategorized .

Capt. Troy Thain’s new 26′ North River is nearing completion at the North River factory in Roseburg, Oregon. It’ll arrive in Gig Harbor, Washington the first of May to have a full compliment of Lowrance electronics installed before being loaded on the barge in mid-May to head to it’s new home in Craig, Alaska.

Chet at the Bay Company in Craig will be rigging this bad boy with twin 150 Mercury outboards and it should be ready to roll and put our guests on the fish by early June sometime.

Troy’s new ride with have a ton of deck space so everyone has lots of room to roam and maneuver in the midst of a wide open salmon bite.

We’re hearing early reports of a few king salmon being caught around Craig and Klawock already. When the herring spawn in Craig and Klawock, well, the king salmon aren’t too far behind. Summer can’t come soon enough!

There are still a couple of great dates available for the summer of 2013. One of them is July 14-18, which is prime time for a big king as well as a mix of silvers, halibut, and bottomfish. If you’re looking for some awesome king salmon fishing two seats just opened up on the Polar Bear June 16-20. Shoot us an email or call 888-943-4746 if you’re interested in learning more about these great fishing dates.

Thanks for stopping by and I’ll post another update soon. Good fishing to you!

* July 27th, 2012 Craig, Alaska Fishing Report

Posted on July 27th, 2012 by . Filed under Uncategorized .

The cohos have moved in here big time with limits the norm here the last few days. Halibut fishing has also been great out on the ocean when we can get outside…not much for halibut in the islands yet. There aren’t many king salmon around out there right now, but the ones that are there are rather large. There’s been at least one or two 50 plus pound king salmon caught by the lodge boats every day for the last week. Every bite you get could be the one!

Here’s repeat customers Ron and Nancie Wilder along with Uncle Franky and my dad John Endsley. Pretty amazing day of fishing to say the least…plenty of cohos out there right now that are more than willing to take a mooched but plug herring.

Scott Hall brought his daughters Beth, Bailey, and Peyton up for his 50th birthday and some father/daughter time. What a great bunch of girls Scott…good job man!

Beth Hall with her 35 pound halibut that just made it into the retention  slot. You go girl!

Grandpa John Endsley was up for a few days of fishing and got a chance to catch up with his new grand daughter Ava while he was here. My lovely wife wife Nicole is on the left.

The halibut enchilada fundraiser put on every few days by Di Thain down on the dock has been a huge hit this summer. So far our guests have raised close to $2000 for the Craig High School wrestling team. She makes halibut enchiladas that are Di-No-Mite!

A huge thank you to all of you that have contributed so far this summer. I can’t tell you how much it means to us. Without this much needed money many of these kids wouldn’t be able to afford to travel with the team. School sports here in Southeast Alaska is a very complicated with expensive float planes, hotels, and meals just to travel to meets and the state finals.

This has become so popular that Capt. Rafael with Tranquil Charters is now bringing his guests over too. The food is great, there’s a lot of laughs and fish lies told, and it’s all for a very worthy cause. Thanks again everyone!

Fishing has been excellent lately and we have high hopes that it will continue. Another thank you to those that have joined us so far this summer and we look forward to seeing the rest of you soon…very soon!

* July 19th, 2012 Craig Alaska Fishing Report

Posted on July 19th, 2012 by . Filed under Uncategorized .

I finally have a moment to post a quick fishing report before we race off and pick up more fishing guests at Island Air Express in Klawock. Here’s a quick run down of the last couple of weeks here in Craig, Alaska.

Early July was really, really good for king salmon fishing here in Craig and then the kings kind of dried up about 6 or 7 days ago. We had some truly spectacular king salmon days early in the month with lots of kings around between 15 and 25 pounds. There were at least a dozen fish over 50 pounds caught out there and one over 60 pounds that I know of. Our biggest is 44 pounds so far this summer.

Luckily the silver salmon were hot on the tail of the kings and fishing for them has improved to the point of being rock solid here the last couple of days. Most of the boats in the fleet are catching limits of silvers or close to it the last few days out there.

When we can get out on the ocean halibut fishing has been excellent for chicken halibut. The halibut fishing in the islands, however, has been very slow. Capt. Kim has made a couple of runs to some offshore pinnacles this past week that have produced excellent ling cod, yelloweye, and black sea bass for our guests.

Here’s a few photos from the last two weeks here in Craig, Alaska.

Jeff June from the Northwest Straits Commission in Washington with a nice 30 pound king salmon caught off Noyes Island. Jeff and his team are responsible for most of the derelict fishing gear removal in Puget Sound.

Mike Hutton, Jim Coe, Jeff June, Phil Stephens, and Bob DeLong with a limit of nice kings caught off Baker Island a little over a week ago. King salmon fishing was really good when these guys were here the second week of July.

Phil Stephens with a nice 25 pound chicken halibut caught offshore in the ocean. Fish like this have been quite plentiful when the weather allows us to get out there.

Al Heeg from San Fransisco caught this Cabezon at East Addington the other day. It’s the first cabezon that’s ever been caught on my boat, but I’ve heard of a few others being caught the last few years.

Brothers Steve Maris and Joe Maris were just here with the Piscatorial Pursuits group. They were lucky enough to land 21 and 32 pound kings one afternoon with Capt. Troy Thain. Nice work guys!

If you’re joining us here in Craig, Alaska this summer don’t forget to purchase your Alaska fishing license online. Here’s some directions and a link to the ADF&G website to purchase your license and king salmon stamp.

Thanks to all of you that have joined us so far this summer and we look forward to seeing many of you here before our fishing charter season closes up the end of August. Fish On!
